Sociable, eco-friendly glamping in the woods, 10 minutes' drive from the Lake District.

How can one place tick so many boxes? Howdy Glamping has a magical setting in the woods. It has a cracking location, 10 minutes east of the Lake District and 15 minutes from the Yorkshire Dales and Pennines. It has an eclectic mix of glamping accommodation, including a gypsy caravan and colourful yurts. And it has one of the most famously warm welcomes in all of Cumbria – just read the reviews about hosts, Andri and Tom, and you get a real sense of the convivial, social space they have created.

Are there any downsides? Well, the glamping site isn’t actually within the national park. But, in a way, that’s another blessing. The local area is less crowded on weekends and during holidays, so you don’t need to pre-book a table at the local pub (The Strickland Arms; 20 minutes’ walk) and there’s a real practical, local feel to the place. It’s a real undiscovered gem.

The glamping site is low key and sustainable. Tom and Andri planted the 14-acre wood decades ago now and there is an abundance of fruit and nut trees which they harvest. They grow their own produce on the rest of the land, too, and use food as a catalyst to bring friends and campers together. Their smallholding has become a haven for like-minded folks, and there’s a real sense of community here as a result.

Accommodation-wise there is a handmade gypsy caravan-turned-camping pod, a retro refurbished ‘70s touring caravan, and several characterful yurts. Each is located in its own secluded part of the land. Some bathroom facilities are shared, including an all-important hot shower, but all accommodation is equipped with the necessities: The yurts have their own compost loos and small kitchen areas, complete with gas hobs, the gypsy pod has its very own summerhouse, complete with kitchen and dining areas, and the caravan has its own outdoor covered kitchen space.

I had a very nice stay at Tom and Andri's. They both said hello to me at different points and made me feel very welcomed. Andri told me a great place to walk my dog and Tom showed me some of the new facilities the place is getting. Lovely quiet stay.

Camping Pitch
We booked this camping pitch at the last minute as a convenient stop just off the M6. Andri was so accommodating and even invited us to the party she was in the middle of organising! The field was flat, soft and contained a couple of other tents and a horse. The toilet/shower block is excellent. This is a great value and convenient campsite.

A lovely enchanted wood.
Ashkey Yurt is set in ancient woodland. The units are very low density so it is extremely easy to unwind whilst marvelling at the nature around you. The yurt we stayed in was huge and had everything we could possibly need. All in all, we would be very happy to return.

We are an eco based family smallholding with 14 acres of woodland and farmland .The Glamping is situated in a woodland we planted 30 years ago and arable land where we grow our own fruit and veg and enjoy the gathering of friends. We have altogether seven dwellings/ accommodations three caravan based , Elderberrie Cabin, Bramble retro van and Rosa gypsy pod and cabin, & three yurt based , Willow , Yewbertie and Ashkey, and one stone barn conversion called Howdy !🤠( with hot tub) please ask about block bookings if you’d like to hold an event or simply gathering.. Fires and fun are an everyday occurrence and a party barn with optional awning and sound system is available! There is an abundance of fruit and nut trees around the land and beautiful walks and wild swimming just a ten minute drive from here. Lowther Castle has fantastic walks and a great cafe just 5 mins away whilst my fave mountains , Kidsty pike, Blencathra , Helvellyn and many more are all under 30 mins away by car. Just past Lowther is our local fell Helton easily accessed by car and a great walk across and down to Pooley bridge and the beautiful Ullswater lake. Penrith is our nearest town but Appleby and Keswick are both beautiful market towns with cafes pubs and great walks. Eden our local area is lesser know than the busy central and South lakes, it’s a gem not to be missed .🌿💚🌿 💚🌿💚🌿
Food and drink

The Strickland Arms is a 20–30-minute walk or 5-minute drive away, your nearest country pub that proudly calls itself the "friendliest pub in the Eden Valley." Food's a priority here and you can expect a variety of pub favourites served in sizeable portions, or cooked fresh using local produce. The Mill Yard Cafe in the charming village of Morland is less than a 10-minute drive away, serving a robust and popular menu from a traditional English breakfast in the morning to delicious pizzas in the evening. The Lowther Castle Inn is another popular local pub in Hackthorpe, located along the A6 and with its Sunday roast coming highly recommended.

Nearby attractions

The Lake District National Park can be reached in a 15-minute drive, the largest National Park in England and one of the most beautiful regions in the country. Ullswater Lake can be reached within 30 minutes, surrounded by mountains making for some dramatic views. Embark on a cruise – make sure you book in advance (017684 82229) – with the Ullswater 'Steamers' ferrying passengers across the lake. Brougham Castle's 13th-century medieval ruins sit pretty beside the River Eamont, a perfect place for photo-taking – if you can manage the steps, tremendous views are waiting for you at the top.
