Family-friendly, traditional New Forest camping with a pub next door and footpaths leading directly from the gateway

The New Forest may be 150 square miles in size but the essential characteristics are almost perfectly parcelled up in the immediate surroundings of Harry’s Field. There’s an appropriately named old English pub – The Foresters Arms – next door, footpaths and bridleways leading immediately from the end of the lane and wild ponies grazing in the heathland across the track. If you want to enjoy all the New Forest has to offer without spending your holiday hopping in the car, Harry’s Field is certainly a top choice.

The campsite has all the basics covered. The field is flat and well drained, there are showers, sinks and toilets at one end and pitches are generously sized. There’s also a great buzz about the place. The meadow affords room for 40 pitches, with a few more set aside for pre-pitched bell tents, and, though they don’t like big groups or late night noisiness, the campsite still has a thoroughly sociable, family feel. The sheltered camping kitchen can be found in a lovingly converted barn with electric kettles, toaster and tea and coffee milk and sugar for all guests. Even the pub has a tendency to captivate every age group – while parents are having a taste of the local ales, kids will fall in love with the donkeys who graze an apron of grass by the front gate.

“We want to run Harry’s Field as the sort of place we would love to camp ourselves”, owner Vivien explains. The Sheriff family grew up on a staple of summer camping holidays and it’s clear their approach to the site draws on classic camping memories: campfires are allowed, dogs are welcome and they’ll happily provide guests with an annotated map outlining the best walks and bike-rides in the area – a little local insight goes a long way. There are no frills, bells or whistles and they don’t have plans to fill the place with new, manmade facilities either. If it’s the sort of place they’d camp themselves then, we’re happy to say, we’d certainly go camping with them.

Just a few steps from your tent there is access to miles of uninterrupted walking trails, the perfect antidote to the unruly din of the city. Keep an eye out for herds of deer and, of course, New Forest ponies. You’re more than welcome to bring your own wild animal along too, we like good dogs on leads and equally good owners who clean up after them. Escapism and considerate New Forest camping underpins our philosophy at Harry’s Field, so we don’t welcome large groups – sorry to be party poopers. With no busy roads, just quiet country lanes, the only thing that will keep you awake at night will be the hoot of owls – and maybe a snoring husband, but I’m afraid we can’t do much about that! The facilities at Harry’s Field are just what you’d expect from a well-equipped camper’s campsite. A small stock of locally sourced foods will be available on the campsite. For more substantial supplies, the local towns of Fordingbridge (2 miles) or Ringwood (6 miles) will not disappoint. More than anything we value the serenity and flawless natural beauty of the New Forest so, as you’ll imagine, we’re super keen on recycling. You’ll find the whole spectrum of recycling boxes onsite so there’s no need to cart your empty bottles home. We have hot showers and flushing loos and sinks for washing up. There’s plenty of room to stoke up your barbecue too, or why not make use of our resident fire baskets? Our ample pitches mean you won’t be tripping over other guest’s guy ropes.

For a truly glamorous camping experience, our fully furnished and carpeted five-metre bell tent is available for glamping in the New Forest for families and couples during the bank holidays and weekends in the summer months. We are keen and happy campers and we know exactly what we would want in our dream tent. Over time we have been sourcing and saving and gathering the best ingredients to furnish our new bell tents to make our customers feel truly relaxed and comfortable whilst still having a camping experience. Forget the hours of packing the camping gear together and trying to squeeze it in to the car: let us set up camp for you; all you have to do is bring your towels, and you'll have everything you will need to enjoy a weekend's glamping in the beautiful New Forest, including an outside cooking area for your camping cuisine. Our tents are British-made of very heavy duty canvas and have many ventilation vents and double zips. They are furnished with a real double bed and proper mattress and two single mattresses for kids/guests if needed. The linen and duvet, pillows and blankets are provided for the double bed but you will need to bring bedding including pillows for the single beds if needed. We have a fully equipped outside kitchen, tables and chairs, trunks and lights, a kettle and teapot and crockery and glasses, a few good books, some playing cards and even a homemade cake to tuck into on arrival. Lighting is provided by LED hurricane lamps, lanterns and fairy lights. Please let us know if you would like an extra mattress which we will provide at a cost of £25/night. Evenings at Harry's Field can be enjoyed in our comfortable and thoughtfully furnished tents with a glass of wine or beer, or seated around a blazing log firepit toasting marshmallows and enjoying the star-studded skies. You will be able to cook outside your bell tent and we will provide a camping stove, kettle and pots and pans. Your safety is our concern, so for that reason we would request no naked flames inside the tents (the image shows a chimney but these are not provided nor allowed). We hire out firepits and sell wood, kindling and charcoal. We can also provide a grill so you can BBQ and charge a £5 cleaning fee. Bell tents may not be booked as part of a group booking. The tent and all fixtures and fittings are strictly only for the use and enjoyment by those sleeping in them. We will allow well behaved dogs for a cost of £20 (max. 1 per tent). What you may need: Bedding for the children beds – we supply a mattress and mattress cover and ask that you bring sleeping bags and pillows for the kids/extra guests; Towels (essential) and tea towels for washing up; Torch Wellies (hope you won’t need them) Paddling shoes for the kids to go in to the numerous stream and (try) and catch minnows We have freshly baked croissants and pain au chocolat. We have a wonderful pizza oven cooking the best pizzas this side of Venice on Saturday nights and The Foresters Pub right next door is one of the best pubs in the New Forest and you would be wise to book if you would like to dine there. Please leave the tent as you found it, with beds stripped and all washing up done. A broom and dustpan and brush are provided so you are able to leave the tent as you would wish to find it!

Well marked out pitches. Very family friendly site with basic but good standard of amenities. Nice touch the mobile bar and pizza/burger stalls in the evenings and coffee & breakfast service. Beware no electricity hook up for campervans and the pub next door shuts early (last orders 9pm in high season)

We had a lovely weekend at Harry’s Field. The pitches are good sized and the facilities clean. There’s a wonderful coffee/pastry van in the mornings and we took advantage of Myrtle the turtles pizza on site for our Saturday meal! The location is close to beautiful forest and river site - we did some lovely cycling and paddleboarding - and there are nice pubs, but of course the local horses and donkeys were the firm favourite attraction for our 2 year old!!

A great spot with easy access to great walks/cycling, streams and more. Staff were all lovely and the facilities were very good. Coffee was pretty good and the little shop had many essentials. Whilst pitch sizes are good, they are pretty regimented with no separation or privacy from others. When full, it feels full! The field isn’t huge! Great family atmosphere just not escapism camping.

Very disappointing glamping experience! Facilities were tired and not clean. Copwebs and dead bugs in the ladies shower area. Tons of hotch potch outbuildings with lots of pots and random items lying around give the whole place a messy and slovenly appearance. No hot water on the first morning we stayed. We were promised access to a fridge and freezer but couldn’t find them as nobody was there to check us in or out or indeed show us where anything was! We were blamed for not being able to find them when we addressed this with the owner. Our lamps in the tent were not working, the bbq and table were dirty. The photos on their website portray a far more glamorous experience than is the reality of it all. I paid a lot of money for two nights at this place but will definitely be not returning.

We booked a 5 night stay at Harry’s field and stayed for 4. Friendly site in beautiful surroundings with helpful staff. We had a great time but it wasn’t quite what I anticipated. Having looked at a few camping sites in the area we chose Harry’s field because they specifically specify that they don’t accommodate large groups and had plenty of space between pitches. Having a disabled child who struggles with noise and is immunosuppressed, space and a peaceful environment was specifically important to us. For the couple of days we were fortunate in that the camp site was not busy and largely frequented by small family groups but by the weekend the site was packed and we were surrounded by larger groups who by the very nature of having 5 tents worth of families were quite loud and took over quite a lot of space. Despite the loud groups the noise did die down around 11ish with the occasional slamming of car doors into the wee hours. My child had a great time making friends and the facilities were fine (although the soap in the loo’s ran out and wasn't replaced for a number of hours which isn’t so good in a pandemic). The noisy groups did get a bit much for us in the end and we decided to leave a night earlier as our son needed a bit of quiet time. I would book again but for a shorter time and In the knowledge that there’s not much space at all between pitches and groups are the norm rather than the exception. Probably a good shout if you are going mid week as a small family group for peace and quiet but be prepared for more of a vibrant atmosphere if you are going at the weekend.

We have been camping at Harry's Field for five years now, and always love returning to this small, friendly site, right in the heart of the New Forest. The pitches are a great size and all of the facilities are only a short walk away. The toilets and showers are clean / warm; the washing up area has hot running water and the small shop is good for essentials. The pizza oven on a Saturday night is also always a hit! We would always recommend this site to others.

Just spent the bank holiday weekend here, and loved it. Wonderful setting with easy walks to explore local area from the camp gate, lovely pub serving food right next door and only half an hour to the coast if you want to explore further afield. On-site good facilities with clean wash rooms, hot showers, fire pits and the all important morning coffee! Friendly team for arrival and the shop, all you need for a fun and easy camp.

The reception was well manned and staff were helpful and available. Toilets, showers small shop and fire pits for sale all good, as was the fact it was right next to a nice pub. I was less keen on having a football being kicked at the tent (and us) on regular occasion - the campsite seemed very full, there was no nearby play area and so kids are playing where they can.

We visited in school holidays and the site was at its maximum capacity - the size of the pitches is good but the rows are packed in leaving little space for children to play….I’m not sure the pictures on cool camping demonstrate how busy the field is. The amount of showers and toilets for that many people was inadequate, and when I tried to shower about 10am I got a cold drizzle rather than the ‘powerful hot shower’ described. The site also claims to not allow event shelters or large groups, but we were across from a large group with an event shelter that were very drunk and noisy until gone 11pm. There were positives though - the pizzas were lovely but we only just managed to secure a slot at 8:30pm. You may be disappointed if you check in that day to find all the slots already full. The lady doing clay and t shirt painting also looked very nice, although we didn’t try it. The field is nice and flat and the girl on the front desk was very friendly. It was also great having the pub next door when you dont feel like cooking, and the forest and animals are on the doorstep. But avoid if you prefer a quiet site with lots of space for children to roam.

We have recently come back from a very relaxing stay at Harry's field. We have stayed in the area before and this is definately the best in terms of location on a relatively quiet road and very near the Forest itself with beautiful walks and scenery. The site itself was great for a family, with a very warm and safe atmosphere. Our children enjoyed playing with other chidren there which was an indication of the friendly environment. The staff at Harry's are friendly but let you get on with things and none of that officious behaviour you get with some campsites. The only negative was the toilets can get busy at key points in the day but in fairness they were kept very clean. A kettle and lots of charing points were a real bonus and alongside pop up pizza and Indian food nights and the pub next door it was a very convenient spot.

I called to ask about moving our booking, at short notice due to isolating because of Covid . As we know Covid changes people’s plans just like that. But I was told , fully booked and no alternative site offered at a different time . Then I felt this was a very hard line to take and so gave the management another chance to offer me an alternative , and ( without even offering her name) this rude person phoned and had an absolute go at me without even allo weinb me to speak . Absolute disgrace . This doesn’t encourage people to be honest about Covid and isolation , what’s more they have just taken over £200 without a holiday, and have been completely uncompromising . . The local council as well as the locals in the village need to know about this approach to Covid. There are other sites in the area , with much nicer ways of dealing with people .

We recently visited this site and it is a very nice flat field. Pitches are a good size and it's very family friendly with lots of space for kids and adults to run about. No noise after about 10pm apart from a braying donkey or two. The only downside is that it's a bit rough around the edges. The description on the site makes it sound like they have loads of clean flushing loos, when in fact there are only two, (plus one urinal) for all the men and three for the ladies. There are two separate flushing loos for families. For the size of the site, this just isn't enough and by mid morning they were pretty disgusting and you had to wait a bit. They were cleaned regularly, but not enough for the amount of people using them. Each loo had a very small sink too, good enough for only washing your hands, with only one large single sink outside if you wanted to wash teeth or your face. Showers were very powerful and hot, which was good, but you couldn't adjust the temperature and were, again, a little unkempt and tired. There was a decent washing up area with one double sink, but lots of bowls and space to clean plates etc. A small shop sold coffee and ice creams but it wasn't open until mid morning. Outside of this is a small courtyard with some ropey old seats to sit on, and again it's just a bit tired and messy. The thought was obviously there but the execution was just a bit lacklustre. There was lots of soap and hand sanitiser around which was good. All in all, a nice site, and recommended, but don't get drawn into the "cool camping" descriptions and hype.

This was our first time camping with 3 children and we were very happy! The staff were very friendly and helpful. There were flushing toilets, clean showers and tea and coffee facilities. There are drinking water taps in various places around the field too. The pitches were large and there was space for the children to play too. Ice cream and strawberries and cream were a bonus! A great experience for all of us and we will be coming back soon!

Vivien and her team really know how to run a campsite ! Pitches are spacious, showers are lovely and hot and everyone is helpful and friendly. There are some nice quirky touches, like the sofa and comfy chairs in outdoor communal area. The fresh coffee is a welcome addition and we enjoyed pizza from Myrtel the Turtle. So many gorgeous walks to enjoy from the campsite - we can't wait to visit again !

A good field with reasonable shower and toilet facilities. A small shop selling drinks and a few bits and bobs (but NO EGGS!!!) lots of fire wood although confusion as to whether it's £10 a go or £5 a go. We were charged both. £10 is a bit steep for 5 logs we say. Helpful staff and special mention to the younger lady who was a great organiser and only too happy to help. Pub next door with OK food and some nice walking nearby. Lovely big flat pitches and we were chatting away into the night without any problem. All in all a lovely weekend, thank you.

Lovely little campsite and clearly well looked after. We stayed in a standard bell tent for what was to be our first glamping experience. Sadly, we felt that there could have been a little more for our money. Inside the Bell tent was the bare minimum. Double campbed with a piece of foam on top, a chair and a small table. Seeing the other slightly bigger tents with double beds, cooking equipment etc. left us feeling a little hard done by even though we know the bigger tents are almost double the price. The little shop, the pizza van and breakfast van were excellent, however for what you pay per night, you could get a decent hotel. If the tent had a proper bed and the necessary cooking equipment without bumping the price up........this would be first class. just an honest opinion. :0)

This was my last camping trip this summer with my little niece of 3 and we had the best two days ever! I have camped all around the new forest this summer trying out different sites and this one topped the lot! Talk about save the best till last! Donkeys, jacket potatoes, campfires, gorgeous nearby walks and to top it a pub next door that did takeaways! Look out Harry we're coming next year!

We visited Harry’s field as a couple, looking to just get back to basics for a few days. The site was mainly populated by families but this was nice for us, as we both have our own kids and we were happy to be in a family environment. There were a few other non family groups and I’d say this campsite caters to most types of camper, as long as you are happy to be quiet and respectful of your neighbours. The facilities were great with wood fired pizza and breakfast vans etc for when we felt a bit lazy. Fire baskets, great kitchen area, v flat site, pub practically next door, all good features, but probably the best thing about it is the friendly and helpful people who run it. Always on site and always warm and cheerful, they were so great at understanding what we wanted from our trip and at giving us the info to make it happen. And their lovely dog mr Fox (this is a v dog friendly place) was the cherry on top. This is the perfect spot to enjoy the new forest and we loved our little getaway. Thanks to Harry’s field for making it so easy.

Where do I start? Got there and was standing in the rain waiting for someone to come over and help. After 10 minutes I finally got advised where my pitch was, but that was literally it. Didn’t get told where anything was, had to find it out for ourselves. If you have kids then this will be good for you, if you don’t have kids and want to go for a fun, chilled weekend, this place is NOT for you. You are not allowed to play music, or laugh after 10:30pm - none or this was stated on the website when I booked, I’m guessing you’d have to dig deep down in the T&C’s (classic) an email was sent with this information the day before we went which I didn’t check as I didn’t think I needed to as it states on the website noise stops at 11. We played music out of our phone so quietly as we heard others playing music too - the manager came over and asked us to turn it off, which she had every right too and it was my mistake for not reading the email, however when I stated I could not find on the website where is stated no music the response I got was “why are you looking on the website, you should just listen to me” I then started to explain that I knew noise stops at 11pm but I didn’t know no music was allowed to which I was rudely interrupted by the manager saying “are you done now? You are just starting to repeat yourself” - disgusting customer service. The next day the other manager came over to tell us that WE need to apologise and the people staying next to us left because of our “bad language” (not one person came over and said ANYTHING about this) and they have to refund their money - what a load of RUBBISH because 1 hour after a new person was pitched up in that spot so they were leaving that day anyways. She said she heard our swearing, yet it states on the website foul language will NOT be tolerate and you’ll be kicked off the site - so if you heard us, why didn’t you say anything? At this point we just wanted to pack up and leave.

Excellent family friendly site. Friendly and knowledgable team who were able to recommend local walks etc, handy to have the little shop for ice cream/ milk / bread etc, and electric kettle for communal use was a real treat! The facilities were small (3 toilets / showers in ladies) but cleaned regularly and there were 2 additional toilets for kids which was really helpful. We enjoyed the Hot Turtle Pizza Van which came Wednesday evening, and made use of the fire pits. Plenty of space around our pitch and we felt happy to let our 3 and 5 year old explore the field on their bikes and make friends. Dogs were all kept on leads, and other people friendly. Staff were great and proactive at contacting people who’s tents had struggled in the gales (which fortunately we survived). A great base to explore with lovely walks, plenty of wildlife but pretty hilly so perhaps not ideal for taking kids out for bike rides directly from the site. We enjoyed the Maize Maze and sunflower farm and paddling in Fordingbridge.

Harry’s field is a small campsite run by campers for campers. We’ve created a tranquil retreat in one of the most serene corners of the New Forest with everything we’d expect to see on our perfect pitch. Combine years of experience, decades of enthusiasm and almost half a century of New Forest camping heritage and you get Harry’s Field, a perfectly formed campsite in one of the New Forest’s most striking hamlet’s. We love it here, in fact, for three generations our family have lived right next door. Escapism and considerate New Forest camping underpins our philosophy at Harry’s Field, so we don’t welcome large groups – sorry to be party poopers. With no busy roads, just quiet country lanes, the only thing that will keep you awake at night will be the hoot of owls – and maybe a snoring husband, but I’m afraid we can’t do much about that! There are cycle trails and numerous walking routes right from the campsite so you can truly explore the best of the New Forest right from the gate. Harrys Field has a well stocked little shop and we pride ourselves on our warm croissants and pain au chocolate (which our guests rave about). Plenty of flushing toilets, hot powerful showers, washing up sinks with hot running water in the sheltered camping kitchen barn, with electric kettles and freezers available for communal use. You can charge your phone and blow up airbeds as we have many electric sockets for the use of our guests. The court yard area is covered with flowers with comfortable upcycled arm chairs, and benches around an outside woodturning stove. Great for when you have had enough of your camping chairs and want to get away and read in peace and quiet! We have a resident Barista so you can have a real cappuccino with our warm croissant and pain au choc in the mornings. The best Pizzas this side of Venice are served from a wood fired oven on Saturday nights (you'll need to order when you arrive). We offer T shirt painting and Bushcraft sessions which are available to book on site (children and adults). Fire pits for hire and wood for purchase. Campfires and BBQs are permitted but must be raised off the grass. The Luxury Bell tents have proper wooden double beds and mattresses and are fully furnished (but you'll need to bring your own bedding for the children's beds). The New Forest ponies and donkeys are all around and may try join you in the camping field!

Nearby attractions

Walking and cycling are the most obvious attractions and the best way to take in the New Forest's diverse wildlife. The New Forest boasts some of the best walking in the country. From the gate you can walk for mile upon mile without ever seeing a road or a car. The open New Forest is all around us and the cycle trails are legendary around our village of Frogham. If you're quiet enough deer, badgers, wild horses and ponies can all be spotted. The New Forest also boasts some of the best walking in the country. Some of the UK's best beaches are also easily accessible with Bournemouth (25 mins) and the famous National Trust beach of Studland (one hour).

Food and drink

There is a small shop onsite selling local produce and a resident barista means you can have a real cappuccino with a warm croissant and pain au choc in the mornings. Pizzas from the woodfired pizza oven are available on Saturday nights (you'll need to order when you arrive) and you don't have to go far for the local pub either as The Foresters Arms (01425 652294) is right next door. For a secret spot, walk across the forest to the Royal Oak (02380 812606) at Fritham (1.5 hours walk or cycle ride with no roads or vehicles in site) or walk across Hyde Common to The Potting Shed Cafe, half a mile away, where they make outstanding cream teas and lunches. The friendly and welcoming Horse and Groom (01725 510739) in Woodgreen is another recommended option serving great food and excellent beer in a very friendly atmosphere. The Three Lions in Stuckton is also just a short 1/2 mile walk away. There are numerous restaurants and good New Forest Pubs in the surrounding villages and in Fordingbridge which is two miles away.
