Desert Vista Campground

Though we all want to camp in caves like they used to thousands of years ago in Seminole Canyon, a campsite with amenities will have to be the second best option!

Stay at Desert Vista Campground, and choose from 23 sites with water/electric, or 8 non-electric sites with water nearby. Venture just outside of camp, and you’ll run into the Rio Grande River Trail, which welcomes multiple scenic overlooks and another pretty sweet pictograph site--Panther Cave. Go just a little bit further and you’ll be in Mexico! (JK, we didn’t tell you to do that...)

Your guide to camping in Desert Vista Campground

Overview

Biking

Take a break from the rich ancient history, wide open skies, and breathtaking rock formations with a little dose of adrenaline. Seminole Canyon State Parks has miles and miles of trails for biking, so whether you prefer to ride beside the Rio Grande, or along the rim of the Seminole Canyon, you’re guaranteed a gnarly background on all your action pics. This trail map will lead you to all the stunning overlooks and tell you the best places to hop on the trail. Want to add a little history to your ride? Head to the wooden bridge, where you can see the 1,500-year-old wikiup structures created by the Native Americans that inhabited this land or explore the nearby railroad crossing, where the nation’s second transcontinental railroad first crossed.

Hiking

Some of Seminole Canyon State Park’s most impressive history and natural wonder can be viewed best from the trail. Wander down the Windmill Nature Trail to see Bill Worrell’s sculpture tribute to the Desert Archaic people, whose ancient art can be seen on the canyon walls. Or take a guided hike around the rim of the canyon, stopping to take in the view at Presa Canyon and Panther Cave overlooks. Seminole Canyon is an epic clash of ancient culture and breathtaking natural beauty, and there’s no better way to experience it than on the trail.
