This was our second stay at the Olive Farm and we’re already thinking about our next visit. It’s just under a hour away from home for us, yet it offers all of the solitude, wildlife, and peace and quiet we want out of a camping getaway. Our dog loved wading into the pond and we had fun paddling around in the boat. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous land with us!

We had a great stay! Tons of open space for tents, and I was super comfortable in one of the small cabins. The kids had an awesome time with the scavenger hunt and absolutely loved the boats. 2 nights at BANKS RANCH IN THE REDWOODS

This is easily one of my all-time fave Hipcamps. Tucked away in a forest with a private creek, it doesn’t get much better. The property spans about 40 acres of beautiful, wooded land that made us feel like we were deep in the backcountry—yet it's easy to get to and not too far from Santa Cruz proper (the hosts provided impeccable directions prior to our arrival). The creek was the perfect place to relax and recharge. Once our hosts showed us to our site, we didn’t see or hear another soul—just how we like it when we camp. The hosts were incredibly welcoming and seemed genuinely happy to share their stunning piece of land with us. Tip: They aren't exaggerating when they say their water is delicious--make sure to get some!

2 nights at The Olive Farm

We were just looking for a reasonably priced place to stay not too far from San Francisco airport area to reconnect with some visiting friends. This site checked that box but when I saw that Novato had bakeries, breweries, wineries and lots of outdoor recreational areas in the vicinity, that made its location even better. I loved that even though it wasn’t remote, we got the whole Olive Farm site to ourselves for privacy and a more backwoods feel. The picnic tables, toilets (serviced regularly so they were clean), potable water, and cabin made for a convenient glamping experience, which was ideal as we had young kids with us and wanted to capitalize on our time with our friends rather than roughing it too much. My family slept comfortably in the cabin, although if you were light sensitive, you might not like an automatic solar light strand shining in the windows. We didn’t mind as we usually keep a nightlight lantern on for the kids, and it wasn’t overly bright anyway. The plug-in light strands really added to the ambiance of the site at night too. We had a few questions for Sam shortly before and at the time of our arrival and he answered very timely and was flexible and pleasant to communicate with. We enjoyed our stay - it was our first time doing a Hipcamp reservation and it was a success!

It was our second year visiting the Olive Farm. What a gem! The campsite is spacious and private. The sink, potable water, and well tended porta potties make camping easy. We loved the ambient lighting around the campsite, floating and swimming at the pond, and the ample space for the kids to explore. Sam is responsive and friendly. Overall, a magical experience. :)

2 nights at The Ranch at Cross Road

If you don’t need anything fancy, this works great. No hook-ups, but lots of space for each spot and hardly anyone there when we were there. Showers are too hot and not adjustable but we just used our camper. Outhouse has a nice sink set up for hand washing. Wouldn’t recommend for dogs if they’re fluffy. Our doodle was covered in burrs and fox tails.

Serenity Now!!! Eileen thought of everything, very organized space with excellent directions on getting there and where to set up. We loved the location and proximity to the Sonoma Square and the stores while being away from the bustle. Thanks 😊

A very sweet overnight camping experience. Very quiet despite being in a neighborhood. The little cow was adorable and his mooing was quiet and infrequent. This IS in a neighborhood, within sight of homes so if you're looking for something totally secluded this isn't it, but I found the stay very relaxing/easy.

This was an awesome camping experience. Being able to shower was a luxury. My pup was so happy chasing her ball in a big, open field. It was pretty quiet for us minus a few coyotes in the distance.

This site is in a perfect location. It's surrounded by dozens of wineries, lots of natural beauty. But it's also only about a 10 minute drive to get to downtown Livermore where there are tons of great restaurants to pick from. If you're into shopping, there are quaint shops downtown as well. The campground itself is organized well. This was actually my very first Hipcamp experience and I never felt lost or confused. There were signs on the property indicating where to set up. The bathroom/shower area felt like rustic elegance. The shower has privacy, but with an open roof which was a great experience. Matt provided very helpful guidance to prepare, including suggestions about what to bring weather-wise and things to do in the area. Actually, his communications were excellent and well timed i.e. I knew the gate code far enough in advance to not be wondering how I'd get in. Felt completely secure and safe. If you are tent camping, I suggest bringing a tool to pound stakes with as ground was dry. Also recommend a base tarp due to dry vegetation. I slept in a 2-person tent and was completely comfortable, slept like a rock. Highly recommend Matt's land and hospitality.

Weekend Trip to BANKS RANCH IN THE REDWOODS

Really great hospitality - kids loved meeting and feeding the animals. The trek to the creek was steep, but the kids loved it (ages 4-8). Lovely, quiet site with sounds of the running creek and nothing else around. FYI no wood fires in summer, but they did provide a propane fire pit as an alternative. Would stay again!

The Olive Farm

Excellent Group Site! We only host one group at a time so you can be with your family and friends in a large, flat and private space. We listed the site for up to 12 campers but feel free to reach out if your group is bigger. Please check out the newest addition of our cabin bunkhouse. Take a look at the pictures - you can add it to your stay as an extra when you book! The land was originally purchased in the 1980's. Since then, it has been used by four generations of the family as a place to gather, relax, camp and even celebrate. I had my wedding on the property in 2010. For a few years we held an annual music festival with the very inventive name of Samapalooza. Up to 400 people would attend the day filled with live music, food and drinks. You will still find the stage and bar we built as an outdoor kitchen and dining area. Around 2008, my father and I planted our first olive trees. Many have been planted since which has gifted the land the timeless sense of purpose it deserves. My father dedicated his last years to tending the young trees and now I have taken the mantle to carry the farm forward. 'The Property', as it is known amongst family and friends has always been a place to camp. I have sat around the same fire ring for decades, rain or shine. I hope that fellow hipcampers can find the joy that my family and I have experienced here. This is a very private camp on a small olive farm. Geographically close to highways and the town of Novato, Sonoma and Napa wine country, this camp feels remote and secluded. Only one camp on the property to keep it private and special. You basically have your run of the land. We have just updated the land and made some nice improvements. Located on ten acres, you will drive past a small olive grove before reaching the spacious and open campground. Just up the hill from the camp is a private pond where you can fish, take out a small boat or just sit and watch the birds. It can be great swimming on hot summer days. This spot has been used by the family for decades and is now open to share with fellow nature lovers. Just a note: While the majority of the time you can expect complete privacy, this is a working olive farm. From time to time you may run into me (Sam) or someone else associated with the land. We will always do our best to respect your space.

Being on the very top of a mountain brings more seasonality than the surrounding cities. Please be prepared for any kind of extreme weather. Summer: Shade is highly recommended it can get into triple digits. *Spring/fall: Temperatures are generally mild but high winds are possible. *Winter: Typically cold and windy. *During rainy/muddy conditions 4x4/AWD is highly recommended. It is possible for it to get windy, foggy, rainy, hot and sunny, and even sometimes snowy. Please note: the nearest grocer is 30 minutes from this site. Emergency supplies are available for delivery to your campsite. Cell phone reception is good on most carriers. Pets are allowed. Enjoy your time howling at the moon, star gazing, bird watching/wildlife viewing, or relaxing with your favorite libation. Don't forget your camera! Since this is our first year renting our land we have found that August is a high wasp season time in the mountains. We are doing everything humanly possible to hunt down each and every Wasp for your enjoyment. The floating barge is moored next to our private ranch, utilized for tent and RV camping for larger groups. We limit rentals to single groups for ultimate privacy in a natural setting. You and your guests enjoy the remote Sacramento River Delta wetlands while being only a short drive from the Bay Area. Guests have direct access to water sports and private docks. *Note: Forbes Island requires passage via the Bradford Island car ferry (see schedule below), a personal watercraft, or a captained passenger ferry boat that must be booked in advance. Boat dock space is included. History: Forbes Thor Kiddoo came to San Francisco in 1959 after a stint in the Coast Guard. A carpenter and engineer, he developed a business constructing houseboats in Sausalito. Then, inspired by Jules Verne’s Captain Nemo and the movie version of “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea”, Forbes Kiddoo built himself an underwater home, complete with portholes for watching the fish swim past, a diving hatch and a grand bedroom suite fit for a captain of his private world. In the ’90s, Forbes added a 40-foot lighthouse and a white picket fence. Today, a small group of committed friends has preserved and kept Forbes Island afloat for community events, opening it for all to experience and enjoy. All campers, whether they are staying overnight or not, must be included in the reservation. Can additional guests be added after the initial booking? Overview

One of California's most-visited cities, compact San Francisco has long drawn in visitors with its beautiful structures–from the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to the colorful Painted Lady rowhouses–and its famous cultural historic attractions. Here you’ll find historic sites such as Alcatraz Island and the oldest Chinatown in North America, along with hundreds of innovative restaurants and many of California’s most impressive museums. And while San Francisco has tons to see and do, it’s also a fantastic jumping-off point for exploring some of California’s most beautiful outdoor areas, many of which are just a short drive away.

Where to go

North Bay

Take the Golden Gate Bridge across the San Francisco Bay and you’ll find yourself in the North Bay, known for beautiful beaches, cute towns, and two of California’s most lauded wine regions: the Napa Valley and Sonoma County. You'll find fantastic camping options across the region, from the redwood forests of Mount Tamalpais State Park to secluded Angel Island State Park, which you can only reach by taking a boat or ferry across the San Francisco Bay.

East Bay

While many people associate the East Bay with Oakland, you won't need to go far to get out into beautiful natural areas, either for the day or for a few nights. Great options with campgrounds include Mount Diablo State Park, where you can take in beautiful views of the region, and Anthony Chabot Regional Park, just east of San Leandro.

Along the Pacific Ocean

Some of California's most inviting stretches of coastline are within a short jaunt of San Francisco, from the dramatic cliffs of Point Reyes National Seashore in the North Bay to the sandy shores of Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco. While many of the camping options in this area are on private land, some state-run parks, such as Salt Point State Park, have campgrounds.

Santa Cruz Mountains

Part of the longer Pacific Coast mountain range, the Santa Cruz Mountains are great for hiking and backpacking. Both Castle Rock State Park and Portola Redwoods State Park have backcountry trail camping options, and Portola also has a group drive-in family campground. Sanborn County State Park is another good option, with both RV and hike-in campgrounds.

When to go

San Francisco's weather is notoriously idiosyncratic, so no matter when you visit, it's good to wear layers and be prepared for the possibility of rainfall. While early summer can get a lot of fog, things usually clear up by late August and stay warm well into early October. If you’re planning to camp in the area, you’ll find pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds after the Labor Day weekend.
