Weekend Trip to Camping under the Stars

Our stay at this campsite was truly amazing. From the moment we arrived, the host was incredibly helpful and friendly, making us feel very welcomed. He provided a container of water and explained camp rules. The campsite was clean and thoughtfully maintained, with plenty of room between sites with trees and brush to maintain privacy for a relaxing experience. The location was stunning—I just love the high desert landscape and is surrounded by mountains that lit up at sunset. The skies at night were beautifully dark and clear, perfect for stargazing. It felt like we had a front-row seat to nature’s best show. During the morning, my son had an absolute blast exploring and catching lizards, while I got to unwind in the hammock and soak in the peaceful sounds of birds and the breeze through the trees. It was the perfect mix of adventure and tranquility. All with close proximity to the lake and adventures in the surrounding area. I highly recommend this campsite!!

Wow! We had the most pleasant time camping. Fred, the host, was so accommodating and friendly. He had freshly mowed an area for our Subaru (we car camp). We were offered water, but we brought our own, and there is an extremely clean portapotty. Even though we were near his campsite, it was still private. The stars were incredible! And the scenery was relaxing. We just needed a campsite within driving distance of Smith Rock (it’s about a 50 minute drive) and we got so much more!! I’m saving this place & telling anyone who cares to listen about it.

This was the perfect spot to experience all three units of the John Day Fossil Beds. It is closest to the Painted Hills unit, which provides stunning vistas of hills, mountains, and sky. The Clarno and Sheep Creek units are about one hour out, both through beautiful country. Host Dee (Diskse) is thoughtful and interesting, and her restored Twickenham Grade School building is an incredible piece of history. Bonus features are the composting toilet and sink, which are clean and easy to use. We were entertained by Julius the cat, who was happy to socialize and determined to join us inside our Airstream Basecamp. The Enclave ranks high on our favorites list!

2 nights at Lucky Six Ranch

Camping in the tipi was great! I didn't have to bother setting up my tent. The floor was covered in carpet, and there were 2 tables and a propane heater (which I did not actually use). I heard coyote and frogs at night, and an owl swooped through the meadow at dusk. I enjoyed meeting the 2 sweet resident kitties and visited with the goats. The info indicated that there was a picnic table, but this was not available. I discussed this with the host and she promptly supplied me with a camp table. The porta potty was very clean.

You will stay on the grounds of the beautiful Historic Crane Ranch, originally established in 1869. There are 325 acres to explore, including wetlands, willow forests, hay fields, creek and peat bogs. Wildlife such as deer, bear, beaver, porcupine, skunk, raccoon, fox, coyote, cougar and squirrels have all been seen on the property. And a rattlesnake was seen 18 years ago. And there are many feathered friends; it’s a bird watchers paradise. There will be a variety of primitive camp sites in addition to the existing two sites close to the headquarters that have 20 amp power via extension cord. Fresh clean water is available from several faucets around the headquarters. Most campsites are sized to allow for group camping which makes this a perfect stop for adventure bikers touring the Oregon Outback or Burners to and from Black Rock City. There is a rustic but clean open air bathroom with flush toilet and a hot shower that is available to all guests in addition to a blue portapotty. Also a community gazebo that encloses a room with netting to keep mosquitos at bay. No outside fires are permitted at the campsites, however there is a community fire ring for a warming fire, pending local fire restrictions. Located just 6 miles south of Lakeview, Oregon, our slice of paradise is only 145 miles (2.5 hours) from Black Rock City and 8 miles from the California border. This is an active ranch environment so at times there could be haying operations going on during the summer. The ranch borders rural Highway 395 and even though it’s usually pretty quiet and the camping is away from the highway, you can still hear it at times. The wetland environment supports so many species, but it also supports mosquitos during the spring and early summer. Be prepared for mosquitos at all sites especially when camping in the willow forest during spring and early summer. Dogs are welcome at all sites and are encouraged to be on leash around the headquarters. However, there is ample space for your pets to run off leash. One can quickly and easily walk to the river trail from our house. Camp is two miles from freeway exit yet miles from any home other than the working homestead that was started in 1890 with huge barn built in 1906 next door. This is a great place to rest for the night or a week. - simple, safe, and private out of the way. Use the west entrance so you can easily enter, then leave on gravel drive. This is a dry camp with no water access or restrooms. This site is 12 miles west from the world-famous Pendleton Round-Up. 8 miles east of Echo Ridge Winery, Sno Road Winery, Echo historical museum, and Echo Golf Course. However in the mean time you can currently book a stay at thoses sites for tent camping. The tent sites offer a comfortable setting for your tent in the sandy dirt. We are next to 100’s of acres of BLM land, including the Horse Ridge Mountain Biking Trail System. There is hiking, biking, horse trails and ATV trails all nearby. Seven miles out of Sisters toward Bend and 10 miles west of Bend toward Sisters, our 2-1/2 acres is situated on the mountain side of the highway (south/west side). Our site offers room for one campervan or an SUV/pickup with small camper. Back-in only please. Expect peekaboo mountain views of Broken Top, Tam McArthur Rim, the Three Sisters, Mt. Washington and Mt. Jefferson. Walk down and meet the sheep. We have blackbelly sheep, a small flock that consists of Chewbacca (the big guy) and Bo Peep and Lucy and Blondie and assorted lambs. Let yourself in to the log cabin. It's a great spot to get out of the rain and play checkers if you want. There is also a propane fire pit. Open fires are not allowed. If you picked up food at The Bite in Tumalo or the The Barn in Sisters, you are welcome to use the picnic table too. And there's a swing next to the sheep pen too.

B:30 Desert Destination

Enjoy Cascade Mountain views during the day and unlimited stargazing at night. Camping is situated on 10 acres and just 10 minutes from the Crooked River, Prineville Reservoir and Millican Valley OHV Trail System . A 15 minute drive will take you to a very scenic hike at Chimney Rock Trail. Bend and Prineville are both a 30 minute drive away. The group tent site has two separate-12' x 14' flat gravel pads and will accommodate tents of all reasonable sizes. Also includes an outdoor shower/compostable toilet, BBQ with picnic area, and propane fire pit. The other two separate tent sites are roughly 20'x20' flat gravel pads and will accomodate 2 individual tents if needed. Also includes shared compostable toilet and individual propane fire pit. Back Side of Painted Hills Camping

This 320 acre plot of land on which you can hike anywhere has been in our family since 1993. Large, graveled spot for tents or two vehicles with excellent view for miles and miles and night star gazing. Primitive outhouse. Juniper forest with sage brush... basically high desert vegetation. We only allow one reservation per night, although there is lodging (reserved) at the log home almost out of sight up above you. You can arrange vehicles or tents to not be in view or block any view from house way above. 320 acres to hike and roam. Mitchell is 10 miles away with well stocked grocery and feed store, restaurants, small brewery, and tire shop. We give directions fairly quickly. Road is wide, but steep at top. 4 wheel drive is recommended. Very close to the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National monument, Ochoco National Forest is seven miles. John Day River for swimming, rafting about 20 minutes. If you can book, it means you can drive on up with out contacting us. As you drive in if at night, you will see a light on the outhouse.

We love living here, and although it is just the two of us working it, we are slowly getting it to what we want it to be. The house we live in is over 100 years old and used to be a stage coach stop back in the late 1800's to early 1900's, You can still see some of the old stage coach roads on the property, and we are trying to preserve those the best we can. Also in the early 1900's this ranch used to be the place to go on the fourth of July. People from all over would bring their prize horses to compete in a horse race for the name of the fastest horses around While others would bring picnic baskets to set back on the knoll in one of our fields to watch. While feeling remote and removed from the Bend tourism, it only takes 15 minutes to get downtown, where there are ample restaurants, shops, coffehouses, etc. It takes 7 minutes to get to Trader Joe's and Home Depot, and 10 minutes to get to St. Charles Hospital. Heads up- as many places in central Oregon, Picknik Place gets pretty dusty and dry in the summer months.

This is a new campground and was only open last year for a short while while in between developing the sites . It was chosen by a very reputable RV manufacturer and had a Television commercial shoot using Buzzards Roost Private Campground as the main site. There are twenty five active dry camp sites and twenty two pull through spaces for RV clamping. Please enjoy your stay
