This is a 10-acre property along the edge of the north bank of the Klutina River--a major king salmon-fishing stream that flows into the famous Copper River just one half mile downriver. That part of the property used for camping along the river is 3 acres. This is a SEASONAL location: Memorial Weekend through Labor Day Weekend with NEW LOWER prices. At this time only the riverside sites (south side of the river dike that one drives across) are available for camping or RV parking. We have no power or other hook-ups on the riverside except that water is available on site through a series of new DEC-approved pipe and spigets, along with more fire pits and more picnic tables. Showers are extra @ $5.00 a person; Laundry tokens: $3.00 per washer load or 40 minute dryer load. Bar on site. Food service coming later THIS 2024 season. WIFI is only on the north side of the dike near any of the overnight rooms or the bar. We recommend no RVs to exceed 28 feet on the river side of the dike. Very private sites and spread out--far more so than other nearby locations. The public restroom is on the north side of the dike. AND we have several budget rooms available on the north side of the dike as well. In 2024, these go for about $100/night. These all have Dish Net, WIFI, and coffee in the rooms. This property is undergoing development. There is still a fire pit on the river side, as we have considerable brush to burn (not during the camping season, but brush is typically piled on the site about the time we open). Just to the east, across the Copper River, is the 12 million acre Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Our property is conveniently located in driving time almost exactly halfway between Anchorage and McCarthy-Kennecott. It is about 3 1/2 hours in either direction. At the Klutina you can charter a sight-seeing river boat or you can white-water raft from a point several miles up a historic trail that follows the river to its source--Klutina Lake and Klutina Glacier. You can obtain a visitors' license and fish here for salmon. You can also hike along the dike or numerous trails in the area.

This small site includes a picnic table and water. No fires are allowed here due to proximity of trees. Very private spot. This tenting location is behind RS-3 and is often used in combination with RS-3 as an extra purchased site for larger groups. You CANNOT park on this site, as it is behind RS-4. If you choose this site, you have to park across the access road from RS-3.

RS1: Preferred Riverside Camp Spot

RS 1 is located along the Klutina River. This site is recommended for regular-sized vehicles, such as a single truck with camper top; or car. Although it can also accommodate a smaller Class C. This is the only spot where two tents are allowed--and up to six persons. This space is ideal to combine with adjacent RS 2, which is a small tent site or parking spot. These locations share the same table, fire pit, and water tap.

Originally built as part of a pipeline oil camp in 1975, this ATCO was rebuilt to include two shower rooms and two sleeping rooms. This is the larger one at the east end, with the shared baths on the west side. Amenities include small refrigerator; microwave; coffee in room; WIFI; TV. Conveniently located near the bar where a complimentary continental breakfast is available from 8 to 10am each day, as well as the community kitchen and shower rooms. Across the parking lot are the Kultina riverside campsites. Uncle Nicolai's is conveniently located halfway time-wise between Anchorage and McCarthy, well within the Wrangell St. Elias National Park.

The host was not there, we were helped by the housekeeper (after asking) as the acces to the place to camp was closed. I can't comment on Ronald as there was no contact with him at any time. The space was just ok, in a nice place next to the river, we were alone.

There was no signage for sites and evenmoreso thatwewereatthecampground. In fact, it was difficult to even negotiate reserving a spot. It was a very basic site which was OK but we were not given directions for restroom or showers. It wasn't obvious where the electrical hookup was.

Love the location and size of the campsite. Stayed at RS1 and it was definitely big enough for 2 tents, had 2 picnic tables (since no one was on RS2, and secluded from the other sites. If the fish are running on the north side of the river, they created a great spot specifically for RS1, as it's 25ft from the fire pit. Only downside was it did have a lot trash but it looks like there are some great additions coming soon.

1914 Railroad Cabin

The owner of Uncle Nic's is really making a lot of improvements to this property. We were in the 1914 Railroad cabin, which was clean and affordable. There is a walking path right down to the Klutina River. We were close enough to hear the river from our cabin. Be sure to check out the Tavern. He has awesome memorabilia, old (but still working) jukeboxes, a pool table, and a large model train system that runs all through the bar and back courtyard! We will be hoping to stay here again when we are in the area!

Don’t recommend. I Reserved and Paid for a premium campsite before arriving. They sold my campsite to another person and gave me a shitty site without any money back. The site had trash in the fire ring, was loud at night and in a bar parking lot next to a tied up dog. Should have just stayed on the side of the road.

We spent two nights at Uncle Nicolai’s campground and Bar. Great authentic old-Alaskan experience, owner Ron Simpson was a wealth of information and a descendent of Chief Nicolas, the Northern Athabascan chief who led the prospectors to copper in the late 1800’s. Great bar, filled with history, three fully operational jukeboxes with three different genres of music, Alaska Railroad G gauge model railroad running overhead, good AK draft with many friendly locals.

Ron was great, very helpful. I was uneasy about campsites. They are on the river but trash pile was between two of the sites. HC site said showers available for$5 but when I arrived sign on door said showers/toilet for cabin renters only. Ron was nice and let me shower. The place needs updated and cleaned up. I didn’t stay the second night as I was too uneasy.

Possibly the worst campsite I’ve ever stayed at. Site was located next to the campground burn site. Full of burned, half burned and unburned trash. Bathrooms were closed. Never found the potable water. Place was pretty run down even by Alaska standards. All this for only $37, which was the most we’ve paid for a campsite in Alaska.

Had a great stay. Site was right by the river and was easy to find. The bar is fantastic with great beer selection and pool table. Toilets only, pat showers which I didn't use. Happily stay again and use as base for area.

The place is a bit run down, but we had a great time chatting with friendly locals in the on-site bar. There is also a food truck on-site, but we walked 5 minutes to the local restaurant, so didn't try it. Overall a good place to stay on the way to or from McCarthy.
