Tater&#x27;s Black Canyon Campground

We loved our experience at Tater’s…it was truly a highlight of our trip. Traci and Chris are terrific hosts, and have really created something special on their beautiful property, offering wonderful camping spots with spectacular views. Their newly built bath house is a bonus for this great Hipcamp. If you’re really lucky you will have a chance to meet Tater the cat, as I did! We will definitely be returning!

This stunning property offers an incredible view of Crawford State Park Reservoir, with a mountain range that will leave you in awe. The charming bathhouse awaits your visit, so be sure to bring your own soap and towels. Enjoy a hot shower, and take advantage of the functioning toilet and sink. This peaceful property is thoughtfully managed, featuring several sites that are comfortably spaced apart. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy fresh farm eggs; though we didn’t meet Tater, the resident cat, perhaps our next visit will bring that moment. With fire hydrants scattered across the property, it’s a safe haven, though campfires are not permitted. Located near the breathtaking Black Canyon of the Gunnison, you'll find plenty of opportunities to kayak or paddleboard at the nearby Crawford State Park Lake.

One of the best campgrounds I’ve ever stayed at. The bathrooms were spacious, clean, and had plenty of hot water. There’s lots of space, a peaceful atmosphere, and I felt completely safe there. And the best part – don’t bother bringing a book or loading up your laptop with movies, because the view is so stunning you won’t want to look at anything else. The only thing that could make it better would be a dishwashing sink behind the bathrooms.

BEAUTIFUL property! I think this is the best view we've ever had while car camping. The bathrooms/showers were very clean as well. You're about 20 mins from the North Rim entrance of Black Canyon NP, 1.5 hours from the South Rim visitors center, and a 3-minute drive from Crawford State Park. The only thing to call out is that there is zero shade at the campsite, so I recommend bringing something to give you a break from the sun. Would definitely stay here again!

Site 4 - Tater's Black Canyon

This Hipcamp is in a beautiful location. It was very quiet and I got a good night’s sleep both nights. I saw mule deer a couple times and got some good photos. The hot shower house is wonderful! Traci & Chris are very welcoming.

A great stop before visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison - we spent just one night here but would definitely return!! Directions from the host were spot on and appreciated the signage on the property. Beautiful views we thoroughly enjoyed. The bath house was so clean! Sites are relatively close to other campers but still private and our neighbors were quiet and respectful. No cell service, but that’s part of the fun of camping! Hope to come back someday!

Site 4 - Tater's Black Canyon

This was a lovely campsite! I stayed in site 3 which had an incredible view of the mountains and reservoir. Maybe one of the prettiest views I’ve ever had at camp. It was a very peaceful place to stay! Camp hosts were friendly and helpful. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

This was our first Hipcamp experience and we had a great time! Great location and view, nice wood chip pads at each site. The bath house had 2 beautifully clean individual bathrooms, with flush toilets, TP, and individual showers available for use. What a dream, and very easy to walk to from each site. Sites are 4, 1, 2, 3 as you drive into camp, with 4 being the most tucked back which we really enjoyed and felt like we had a good amount of privacy. Close proximity to both Crawford State Park and Black Canyon NP. We saw various birds, chipmunks, and deer at the campsite each day/evening. We camped with our teardrop and had no issues backing into site 4. Got to wave goodbye to Tater on the way out. Thanks for a great stay!

Beautiful place with very nice and clean bathrooms/showers. Amazing view from campsite and some of the best stargazing at night. Even small details like wood chips for tent pads really stand out and separate this place from the several Hipcamps we have stayed at. Would definitely stay again!

Incredible location! So close to the north rim of Black Canyon. The bathhouse was so nice. Love the branding with all the Tater signs! I do wish there was a little more separation from the other camp sights though. Site 4 is the most private. Site 2 and 3 are side by side with basically no tree cover in between. Site 1 is off to the front a bit so you’d have unobstructed views of the valley.

This spot is spectacular!! Gorgeous view of the reservoir and mountains, a little bit of cover from the bushes for privacy between campsites, a pristine bath house with hot showers, and picnic tables at every site - I would 1000% stay here again! Especially because I didn’t get to meet Tater - gotta come back for that alone :)

Really enjoyed my stay at Tater's! Unfortunately never got to meet the cat him/herself, but the views were to die for. It was peaceful, and the shower house is such a nice luxury when you've been sleeping outside. Would love to visit again and highly reccomend :)

A spectacular view! A lovely spot that felt private but also very safe. The hosts were friendly and responsive. The bathrooms were the cleanest camping bathrooms I've come across. My favorite hipcamp spot so far. Hope to be back soon. Thanks Tater!!

Great views & hot showers

This was the perfect launching point for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. We got in quite late and the site was easy to find in the dark (and the directions super clear from the host). Gorgeous morning view of the mountains, and amazing night sky. And what luxury to have hot showers and well-lit bathrooms on site! Would definitely recommend and will be coming back if in the area in future. Only downside was that we were never visited by Tater :)

Beautiful location, wonderful site

We loved Tater’s Hipcamp. It is a spectacularly beautiful location, with well laid out and maintained sites and a really nice bathhouse with flush toilets and hot showers. We moved from site 1 to 4 because it was easier to back out teardrop into and it was set back a bit further than the others, giving us more privacy. Chris and Traci are both lovely people and we will happily come back again someday.

We loved the view from the site. The bathhouse was very clean and the shower was nice to have. We saw Tater the cat on our way in. This was a great stop on our cross country trip. We were also grateful for the ability to book only a few hours before we arrived. I highly recommend Tater’s Hipcamp.

Beautiful! I wish I could leave a picture of the full rainbow over my tent, the picnic table and the lake - it was ideal. The restroom/shower house was brand new and super clean. If you’re like me and don’t read directions, maybe you’ll see this ahead of time - I had no cell service around the property and Google ended my trip on the east side of the coordinates given here, you have to keep going around the bend to find Lakeview road. Highly recommend!

Tater was there to greet us the moment we pulled in and walked me halfway to the campsite. Big fan! Views from the campsite were so much better than we thought, and we already thought they’d be good just based on the listing! Hosts were super accommodating & communicative. Cannot say enough good things about the bath house. There’s something to be said for a hot shower and running water when camping! We were also only a short drive from the north rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison, which was so convenient and totally worth checking out. Give Tater extra scratches for us!

New Favorite

After five nights at Tater’s we can absolutely say we found our new favorite Colorado camping spot. Hosts 5/5 Traci was communicative and helpful, without being intrusive Facilities 5/5 The sites are level, covered in wood chips, and far enough apart for reasonable privacy. The double bathhouse with showers is next-level nice for a campground facility Cleanliness 5/5 The bathhouse, so clean – seriously, really nice Views/Vibe 5/5 Overlooking the valley/reservoir at sunset is special: golden hour with the fall colors (mid-September), the mountains, Needle Rock, the cows lowing in the distance – again, really nice. The sites are terraced so each has a good view. Access 5/5 For the canyon, it’s just a half hour to the north rim. For town access it’s a quick drive to Crawford for drinks at the Hitching Post, a reasonable drive to Hotchkiss for a range of restaurants and groceries, or to Paonia for the wineries. We look forward to coming back next year!

The view at Taters is unbeatable! The sites were far enough apart that we couldn’t hear our neighbors and the bathhouse was great. We didn’t want to leave!

Mountain views!

We enjoyed our 1 night stay! Neighboring sites were close but they were quiet. Could hear road noise in the distance but it was fairly quiet. Breathtaking views of mountains!!! Short walk to finished bath house. Only thing we missed was a mirror in the bathrooms but they were clean and got the job done! Only 'complaint' was the road leading to the site was a bit rough for our low riding car. The drive way was much better but we went a mile at about 10 mph or less. As long as other campers are aware and have a vehicle that can make the road in we highly recommend this site for future campers. Verizon had no service. Google fi/ t mobile had limited service.
