3 nights at Rustic Haven Retreat on 80 acres

We loved camping on Adam's "little slice of heaven"! The views are amazing and the area is quiet. We realized at the last minute that we need power for our teardrop camper and Adam responded immediately. The area is close to many lakes and we visited a few. We loved swimming at Half Moon Lake. We also loved our walks to and from Union Cemetery - just up the road. On our last night of camping we were gifted with a rainbow and a family of swans on the pond. Weekend Trip to Rustic Haven Retreat on 80 acres

We enjoyed a quiet and peaceful weekend. The view of the barn and pond were lovely. There were swans on the pond and Sandhill Cranes and deer that came around every day. We parked our 30ft camper up near the house where the power was, nobody was around all weekend. If you wanted to feel more secluded you could set up down at the far end of the barn (without power hookup). Nice fire ring and the wood was right there too.

The location is on a quiet gravel road with nice views of a pond and rolling hills with woods in the distance. The firepit was nice with a pile of wood right by it.

Weekend Trip to O'Dalaigh Hideaway

Don’t let the smaller size of this Hipcamp fool you, this spot is awesome! We stayed right on the edge of the river, and the soothing sound of the flowing water made for the perfect backdrop all weekend long. It was incredibly quiet and serene; even though there are a couple of cabins nearby, we hardly knew they were there. It truly felt like we had our own little slice of nature to ourselves. The site was clean, easy to access, and offered just the right mix of comfort and wild. Whether you're looking to relax, fish, paddle, or just listen to the river with a cup of coffee in hand, this place delivers. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a peaceful escape. We’ll absolutely be back!

Beautiful site next to the river ~~ we appreciated the available firewood, multiple options for tents, and the very classy outhouse!

Weekend Trip to Hidden Pines

The campsite was roomy and even came with a very thoughtful bug torch to help keep the bugs away (of which there unfortunately was many, given the time of year). Plenty of space around the firepit, a nice picnic table to set up on, and multiple good spots to put a tent up with room for a much larger tent. The only downside is that it does face directly south, so during the day it is full sun!

We enjoyed our time, how private the camp sites were, the maintained trails, access to toilets and showers. Our kids want to go back for a week the next time (and there will be a next time) we go up. We also liked that we could find our own fire wood or go to the wood shed to get some.

2 nights at Bundo's Cabin

Had a great time, the cabin is beautiful and cozy. Unfortunately she made me sleep on the couch but that's my fault, nothing to do with the cabin! Beautiful night view of the fireflies! Wish there was a washing bin, or maybe there was and we just didn't find it. Dog loved it also. Make sure to pack bug spray.

1 night at Superior Beach Camp

This camp site was amazing! We loved the open grass area for camping and the short walk to the beach. The private beach was a huge selling point- and it didn’t disappoint. It was perfect for our dogs! The owners were super communicative and had great instructions.

4 nights at Trego Lake Lakefront Property

This place is incredible! It's so easy for large RVs with all the hookups and concrete pad to park on. Gorgeous river views off the dock, and an amazing fire pit set up. We saw deer, turtles, frogs, birds and more! It was our second visit and we'll definitely be back again.

Super easy to navigate and very clean area! The private access to the river was really nice and scenic. Appreciated the clean bathroom as well! We enjoyed our stay and would return ◡̈

Pleasant setting, quiet and peaceful. We heard a train, not a big deal. Had a good night’s sleep after a long drive. And got to meet the dogs!

Weekend Trip to Floodwood Municipal Campground

The Floodwood Campground was in a convenient location for anyone wishing to visit the Sax Zim Bog Visitor Center. The City of Floodwood has all the necessary services. The campsite was adequate. Water, electricity, and showers were available. A fishing dock is on the St. Louis River. I felt safe. I tent camped so didn't use all of the offerings. At $40 a night it was overpriced. The campground is brand new. The lights from the neighboring houses was annoying, I felt like I was camping in someones backyard. Perhaps some plantings of shrubs could improve the view for campers and neighboring house. I camped on a Saturday night in early June- only 3 of the 15 sites were occupied. Even though the campground is right next to the St Louis River, it wasn't very attractive. The area seems to have a shortage of accomodations. There is the Starlite Motel. Floodwood is on major US 2 which runs from Duluth to Grand Forks, ND

Really impressed with how clean and well-kept this campground is. The grounds are spotless, the bath house is well-maintained, and the dump station is super convenient. We especially loved the easy access to fishing—made for a peaceful and fun way to spend our time. The only thing keeping this from being a full five stars is the lack of privacy. Sites are pretty open and close together, so you don’t get much space to yourself. That said, if you don’t mind being near your neighbors, it’s a fantastic spot with great amenities and a beautiful, relaxing setting.

Kyle and Kelcie were very kind and accommodating hosts. The camper was very clean and comfortable and it was so fun waking up surrounded by the trees. Even though it was chilly, we also enjoyed the swimming pond (right after the amazing sauna!). Would highly recommend!

Weekend Trip to O'Dalaigh Hideaway

Great place to camp right on the river. It rained a lot during our stay and our host, Rick, was very thoughtful to make sure we had dry firewood, a safe walkway to our site and also gave us great recommendations of where to visit in the area. The tent sites are a little uneven but that is to be expected in an area susceptible to flooding and wouldn’t stop me from visiting this hidden gem again, just something to be aware of. Highly recommend.

Activities include swimming at local beaches, Nemadji State Forest, General CC Andrews State Forest, ATV riding, lots of great fishing lakes, several rivers for kayaking and canoeing, local restaurants, coffee houses, movie theater, general store, shopping, antiques/craft, grocery, gas, local brewery, agate center, fire museum. The land was purchased by the Sway family in the late 70's from a farmer and has been in the family since. We are one of the 4 current land owners of this property and plan to keep the land in the family as long as we can. Our home was built in 2011 on part of the property. Since living here we have used the land for hiking, gardening, wood harvesting, selling Christmas trees, and now we are excited for our new adventure of opening a small part of our land for camping. O'Dalaigh Hideaway

Note: Address is NOT 31128 Riverside Drive, Pine City as shown on Hipcamp. It is located right next to 31128 River Bend Drive, Pine City. Hipcamp will not allow me to put correct address there. The property is on a vacant lot next to our cabin lot on the Snake River East of Pine City MN. This lot has the better river view and experience as its a small peninsula that juts out to the river with rapids. There is a swimming area right next to the campsite or feel free to jump into the rapids if you want a rush. River is not deep most of the year and there is fishing right there as well, mostly large and small mouth bass. There is parking off the road and a short walk to the campsite, just follow the sounds of the river. A small wagon is provided to help with getting gear down to the river tent site. New this year (2025) is a composting toilet along the trail to the tent site. It uses a "separator" where #1 goes back to the earth (as it is sterile and liquid) and #2 goes into a bucket and is covered with wood chips. There is also a standing urinal for men if desired. If you would prefer to use a pit toilet there is one on the property with directions marked with a sign. It is a farther walk however, about 100 yards from the tent site and on the cabin property near the driveway. If you want something even more convenient, feel free to bring your own. Firewood is available for sale onsite or feel free to clean up dead wood lying along the trail at no cost, note that it is more than likely freshly cut and wet but will burn if the fire is hot enough. The tent site is right next to rapids on the Snake river. If you struggle sleeping to the sound of rushing water, this may not be for you!

PRIMITIVE - HIKE IN CAMPSITE Wilderness Experience Minutes from Duluth About the campsite: THIS PROPERTY IS RUGGED WITH MINIMAL DEVELOPMENT BEYOND HIKING TRAIL AND CAMP AMENITIES. Camp Palustria is on the edge of a beautiful marsh within 75 feet of a trout stream. It is about 1000ft off of the Superior Hiking Trail. The campsite is primitive which includes fire pit with grill, table, and composting outhouse. The site is about a 600ft hike from the road where you'll park. The first 400ft of the trail is a swamp with a simple elevated boardwalk through most of it. 95% of the time is it passable with hiking boats or street shoes, but there might be some muddy spots. Dispersed winter camping is also available. This campsite was featured on NPR Marketplace Campsite is closed during hunting season. About the property: Trembling Gardens is my 10 acre swamp camp paradise in the rural suburb of Rice Lake. The property is about 20 minutes away from downtown Duluth and Canal Park and has easy access to the North Shore.

Stock up on supplies and explore the charming industrial town of Superior, WI – 15 minutes from your campsite. Spend a day mountain biking the Duluth Traverse and touring the the wonderful local dining and tap room scenes of Duluth and Superior. Canal Park, downtown Duluth, is a 25 minute drive. If you’d like to venture further, you could meander up the North Shore. Or keep it local and check out Bayfield and the Apostle Islands – only 75 minutes East. Stop through the charming lakeside village of Cornucopia on your way. Or perhaps you’d like to experience world class trout fishing on the Brule River a half hour from Superior Beach Camp. About

The Nemadji State Forest sounds like something out of Lord of the Rings, and it kind of is! Vast swamplands blanket the south, leading to gently rolling uplands that are broken by steep stream valleys, while dense forests extend to the northeast. Who knows, maybe you’ll find a hobbit hiding out in some hole deep in the woods?

With about 100 miles of trails dedicated to ATV and OHM riding, you’re more likely to see people on their off-road toys. There are amazing hiking trails here as well. Your trusty hiking staff will go a long way in this forest. So go find Samwise Gamgee (aka a friend) and set off on an epic adventure!

When to go

The best times to visit Nemadji State Forest are during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer offers lush greenery, but be prepared for busier trails and potential heat. Winters are harsh, with heavy snowfall limiting access to certain areas.
