Texas Safari Camp

44 sites · Lodging, Tents31 acres · Kaufman, TX
Welcome to Texas Safari Camp Come escape to a heavily wooded 31 acre pristine wildlife habitat. Only one hour east of Dallas but it feels like another world. At the end of a one lane rock road- this is a very secluded property. It is perfect for tent camping groups and individuals, has a very positive vibe and is more peaceful than most state parks. It adjoins a 950 acre wildlife park with 900 exotic animals. Many can be seen from the road or you can pay to drive through and feed the animals. Your host is Randall Oliver. He has been organizing group campouts (with as many as 40 people) for years and enjoys hosting, bringing people together and creating new friendships and memories. Everyone is welcome and campers are treated like family. He can teach your kids to kayak and build a camp fire. You can fish for largemouth bass, cat, crappy and bluegill in the two ponds and swim, paddle kayaks and paddle boards, hike the jungle trail and socialize around the campfires. There are no designated campsites. You can camp anywhere except between the green building and the front pond. No vehicles are allowed back on the property. Off road wagons are provided to help haul your gear. Front pond camping areas are 30-100 yards from parking area. The rear pond is more secluded but farther from the parking and outhouse. Bee Mountain River Resort

10 sites · RVs, Tents100 acres · Cleburne, TX
Nature and wildlife filled with fun and relaxation, Bee Mountain River Resort is a one-of-a-kind property. Private, spacious and beautiful, we are blessed with 1.5 miles of sandy beaches along the Brazos River and the white noise of life’s hectic pace doesn’t really exist here. Visitors enjoy our quiet and beautiful surroundings along with the good company of family and friends. Best of all, you get to play on some of the finest water in Texas for boating, fishing and water sports. Adults and kids love it here because it’s a great place to hang out, to be active, and have some good old fashion fun. Our customers are usually groups of friends and family; many have camped here for years. A few even claim to have grown up on the river and, to some extent, that might be true. Bee Mountain River Resort is a secluded off-the-grid campground that's been around since the '70s. And it's pretty well known to the locals. I first discovered the Brazos River in 1985 looking for good water to ski on. Having developed many great memories camping here over the years, I would describe our ranch as classic and old school. Change comes pretty slow.....and we like it that way! Family, friends, kids and pets all love our amazing getaway. A rare gem best shared with good and friendly people. Each and every campsite is located directly on the river and all of them are huge. Firewood, ice, kayaks, paddleboards and generators are available at low prices. Great tasting water from our 500' deep well, clean restrooms and a camper dump station are located on premises. We are very pet friendly providing your pet is friendly.

The best camping near Cedar Hill State Park guide

Overview

About

Just 30 minutes from downtown Dallas and Fort Worth, Cedar Hill State Park provides a pocket of greenery for urban campers looking to get out of town. Lush prairies, wildflower-speckled hills, and ancient cedar forests fringe the shores of the 7,500-acre Joe Pool Lake, where you can swim, boat, kayak, or fish for largemouth black bass, crappie, and catfish. Miles of hiking and mountain biking trails may tempt you away from the water, as will tours of the Penn Farm Agricultural History Center. Campers have five campgrounds to choose from, or you can opt to get back to nature at a walk-in primitive campsite.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for lake views: Hog Wallow Campground has 50 sites—some of which are right by the lake—with picnic tables, fire rings, and full hookups.
  • Best for peace and quiet: Shady Ridge Campground has spacious sites for tents and RVs away from the crowds.
  • Best for backcountry hikers: Cedar Hill’s primitive campsites are reachable only on foot and lie along the Duck Pond and Talala trails.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. You can reserve one of the park’s 350 developed campsites in advance via the Texas State Parks website.
  2. Campsite reservations open five months in advance, and popular sites can book up fast, especially for summer and holiday weekends. Book at least three months in advance—even earlier if you have a specific spot in mind.
  3. Primitive sites are first-come, first-served, and there are 30 spots up for grabs—the main gates open at 6am, so get there early to avoid disappointment.

When to go

Cedar Hill State Park is open year-round, and there are highlights for campers in each season. Wildflowers bloom across the prairies in spring, while summer is the ideal time for swimming and water sports, and autumn and winter offer the best bird-watching opportunities. The park can get busy in summer, so make an early start to get a jump on the crowds.

Know before you go

  • Cedar Hill State Park is located 20 miles southwest of downtown Dallas, or about a 25-minute drive away.
  • Park entrance fees and overnight activity fees are required in addition to camping fees. General entrance reservations can be made up to one month in advance and are recommended, especially for summer weekends.
  • Facilities in the park include restrooms, picnic benches, and a playground. You can purchase groceries, firewood, and camping supplies in Cedar Hill, a 5-minute drive away.
  • Campsites all have electricity, hot showers, water, and fire rings. Some sites also have sewer hookups, and others are ADA-accessible.
