1 night at Dragonfly Mountain Ranch

We absolutely loved this Hipcamp and highly recommend it! This is a true gem in Taos, New Mexico. Don is the most knowledgeable and friendly host. Ask him for the best spots to visit on your trip! Sites 1 and 2 are closer to town and the road to the ski valley, but still very beautiful and private. It was the perfect launching point for our earlier morning start to conquer Wheeler Peak. The toilet was spotless, and the fresh gallon water tank is a great amenity. The firepits are a great touch for those chillier mountain nights! Tio Willy's rest stop and hideout offer access to 300 acres of rugged country on the Taos Plateau. These sites are bordering BLM land with quick access to the Rio Grande River via the John Dunn Bridge Recreation Area. We enjoyed our dip in the river and the scenic drive to reach these sites! We can't wait to come back to Taos and spend more time at these amazing sites!

What a lovely couple of nights we had at Anastasia’s spot! The sunsets - gorgeous. The bath house - so convenient. The fellow campers across the way - so friendly. The dogs - so cute. The Taos Cow being at the end of the road - delicious (for breakfast and ice cream - be sure to go before 3 if you want a meal). The nearby hikes - lovely! The tour of the property - informative and thoughtful. We will be back!

We absolutely loved our stay and Anastasia was a fantastic host! We stayed at the campsite Uno and it had beautiful views and conveniently located right next to the bathhouse. My only issue was that there were dogs barking all night (not the host but her neighbors) and coyotes howling through the night as well. Not my camp host fault by any means, but something to prepare for if you plan on sleeping in your tent.

4 nights at Dragonfly Mountain Ranch

My wife and I, plus our two dogs wanted to explore Taos area for a long weekend. Don and his campsite , Dragonfly 2-Bonsai, was the perfect spot for us in our campervan. Close to town , but still feels private. Great views of the mountains, yet easy access to restaurants, Taos Pueblo, and trails. Don is an amazing host, providing a clean porta-potty, water on site, and great recommendations. His family has owned the land for generations as original homesteaders. He allowed us to go to his other location, Tio Willy’s, to hike and explore. That site is a bit further from town but an amazing views and history. Don’s knowledge and pride for his family’s history, plus his conservation of their property is beautiful to see. And for him to share it with the Hipcamp community is something special! Whenever we visit the area, we will not hesitate to stay with Don!

Beautiful property. Outstanding night sky. We were the only campers on location during our overnight stay. The RV sites are very close together which would be especially nice if camping with a group of friends and/or family. Visited the chicken coop which included peacocks and rabbits. Nice peaceful pond. The property dog was a sweetheart. Very nice clean bathrooms...one with a shower. Would definitely visit again.

Weekend Trip to Abiquiu Tiny House

The Tiny House was absolutely perfect. It was clean, quiet, comfortable, and had everything we needed. In fact, it’s not so tiny at all, and Harvey thoughtfully built it himself! This place is an ideal location for all things that Abiquiu and nearby towns have to offer. We did several long hikes around the area and loved coming back to this peaceful abode. Harvey is a phenomenal host, and we are already looking forward to visiting again! Thank you, Harvey, for the best stay in NM.

Weekend Trip to Rio Grande Camp

We really enjoyed a slice of heaven on Ed and Erika‘s Rio Grande River Bank site. The river is truly beautiful here, and we were lucky enough to even see a beaver. There’s ample space to park an RV, and nicely landscaped rock steps take you down to a grassy area on the riverbank of the Rio Grande. You can easily set up here with camp chairs, your kitchen table, even a tent. As others have noted, the highway noise is definitely a factor. It recedes later at night, but if highway noise bothers you… We had the good fortune of meeting Ed, and he was super accommodating and friendly. We would love to stay here again.

Property is rustic now, but improvements will continue to be made as time goes on. Come help me develop this beautiful location into the best Hipcamp in New Mexico. Just 14 miles of the Chile Capital of the World, Hatch, NM, come during chile harvest to take home fresh green chile right out of the field. 21 miles from Las Cruces, where you will find plenty of events and entertainment, should you so desire. Spaceport, America, T or C, White Sands are all within a day's drive, and Fort Selden is just a few miles down the road, as is Blue Moon Bar and Grill. My dad first came to this property as a farm hand for the elderly couple who owned it. This was in the 1930's. He met my mother, who lived 6 miles down the road, in 1939. She was just 14. Every Sunday he would ride those 6 miles to have supper with her and her family and in 1940, 2 weeks after her 16th birthday, they married. They traveled around before coming back here, buying a small portion of this farm from the elderly owners and farming the rest for them, but in 1953, the man died (his name was Ernest Ward) in the small concrete house I now use for storage, that my dad had built for he and his wife when he first came to work for them. My parents built a home for his widow in Hatch (14 miles) and bought the farm from her. My family has owned it since. I was gone for 31 years, but returned to the land and place I love and plan to stay here till I die!

Wake up in the morning, walk down to the river and you'll see heron, coots, osprey, sandhill crane, red wing black birds, and so many more wildlife. The coyotes regularly sing throughout the night. I tend the property and you may see me around if I need to do light repair work. There is a care taker for the property who lives there and may be another guest as well. The property is 1/2 a city block. Your living quarters are private but the land is shared space. I'm available to engage if desired and I respect your privacy. The property is 6 city lots large and you will have access to 4 of them. Dogs are allowed for an additional fee. The Enchanted Circle Campground sits on the Avalon Ranch. It is 161 owned acres surrounded by a state trust lease. We are very proud to have been voted #1 Campground in NM 4 years in a row and ranked Top 5 by Forbes in the country. We have 8 Sites to choose from. (No large RVs at 4, 7 or 8) Campfires are permitted, and pets are welcome. Free potable water is available as well as a portable toilet. For cooking, you will have a fire pit, with a cast iron grill. Every site (but 7) has a standing charcoal grill, with tongs, a spatula and a grill brush. A fire extinguisher and a shovel. We hang a hand washing jug at every site for your convenience, with potable water, but do not suggest this for drinking water source. The property was originally homesteaded in 1893. It was also the first potato farm in NM. It has seven ground-fed springs that run year-round and is officially the Coyote Creeks Headwaters. The springs converge after filling 4 of our ponds in the marshland where the potatoes were grown. A family of 4 lived in the first dwelling built here, not much larger than a shed. Since that time, 2 homes, 1 of which still stands, a barn, a smokehouse, and 4 other outbuildings were constructed. There are old wagons and farm equipment from the late 1800s and early 1900's still strewn about the ranch. We are home to Huge herds of Elk, mule deer, turkeys, prairie dogs, eagles, black bears, 9 horses, chickens, pigs, goats, our 2 dogs and 4 cats, and the occasional Mountain Lion. We live here year-round. We love our land and want to share it with others. I am a Veteran and our intent is to eventually have a Veterans Retreat facility here. Not a retreat itself, but rather a location for all of the retreats, nationwide, to be able to utilize, so they can use the funds they have to do what they do best. You are helping to make that possible. We do pride ourselves on minimally impacting our land. We strive to keep it clean and as close to nature as we can. And as always, Veterans, LEOs, and Fire Fighters are always free for one night up to 4 guests. As well as a monastic and very grounding Ensuite Bedroom, or a simple campsite if you want to bring your own camper or tent. All facilities have access to a guest bathroom inside the main house. I offer dog sitting while you soak at Ojo, healing modalities that you'll find in the Extras section, and my dear neighbor Jackie takes appointments for massages with homemade essential oils. +++ 6 miles to Ojo Caliente Hot Springs. There you will find the best restaurant in the area, with locally/organically farmed produce. The land is naturally and beautifully wild- it is not a manicured campsite. The dirt rd down to the property is best suited for higher clearance vehicles, but is manageable for city cars. With land by the river comes the mosquitos- June to August only. They are predominantly active during sunrise and sunset; long loose fitting clothes and a repellent work great. Waterhole, Waterfall and climbing sites near by, as well as Plaza Blanca, Abiquiu, Ghost Ranch and the Taos Gorge are 30 mins drive away. *No cell service in the greater area. Rancho Algo Mas

This land was previously undeveloped when we bought it in 2011, having only been used as horse grazing land and chile production in the 1960s. It is characteristic of inherited irrigated properties in the area and is about 150 ft wide and half a mile long that extends from the traditional irrigation ditch (acequia) at the top of the property to the river drainage. In the 1940s the Chile Line Railroad ran through here on the way to Espanola. Learn more about this land: Nestled in the river valley halfway between Taos and Santa Fe, near the confluence of the Rio Chama and the Rio Grande, this off-grid property is just north of Ohkay Owingeh, where indigenous settlements have existed for many centuries due to rich soil and available ground and surface water. In the 1500s settlers from Mexico came to farm land for New Spain. These historical Spanish and Native influences and identities run deep in this area, as well as the more recent influences of hippie dropout culture in Taos, Ojo Caliente, and Dixon. We have lots of book recommendations if you want to learn more about the complexity of culture and identity in northern New Mexico. Our 5 acres property is a narrow agricultural strip that extends from the irrigation acequia (ditch) at the top of the property down through a dense bosque (forest), ending in a path to the placid river bend of the Rio Grande. The campsites lie midway, among the privacy of the cottonwood bosque and adjacent pond. It is a short walk to a riverside perch with stairs to the shallow water and kayak launch. Other activities on the property include visiting the goats, chickens, and our friendly dogs, playing on the scrap-built playground, swinging on the pond swing, wading in the river, fishing, and doing some beginner kayaking the pond. This property is at its best late Spring through mid Fall when all is green, the pond is full and river is cool. Winter camping is still doable but may include snow, frozen pond, and leafless trees, and sandhill cranes. The site has a nice firepit and we have lots of wood. Summertime means mosquitos so come prepared with some serious sprays or creams- and don't bother with citronella candles, they won't be effective here. You will have a lot of privacy in the bosque, and it is relatively quiet from urban noise. You will be in agricultural and farm country, so you will be amongst the sounds of roosters, sheep, goat, peacocks and horses doing their thing in the farm land all around you. There can be dogs barking so if any of this noise bothers you you will want to bring earplugs.
